Printmaking Portraits

In art class this year 6th graders have been working with the theme of identity to represent themselves in a series of self-portraits. For this unit, students began by exploring abstract expressionism. They created a large scale abstract painting that expressed their "internal" identity.

Next, students looked at the work of printmaker Käthe Kollwitz. They studied her use of contrast and contour lines to create her striking self-portraits. Students then created their own self-portrait that exaggerated one aspect of their identity. 6th graders carefully carved their linoleum blocks using both contrast and contour lines which they used to print their amazing self-portraits!
