Story Quilts

3rd Grade students began this art unit by reading the book “Tar Beach” by the author and artist Faith Ringgold.  Using Ringgold’s book and quilts as inspiration, students created a drawing that represented their favorite memory.  Students included a foreground, middleground, and background in their designs to add space to their work.  Students completed the unit by writing a short story about the memory they represented in their quilt.
