HRA Animal Portraits
This past summer I lead an amazing "Art and Animals" camp at the Humane Rescue Alliance located in Washington, DC. During the week students got to spend time with animals at the shelter while also creating art inspired by animals. Below are two of the painting projects they completed during the week! (Students were all rising 5th-8th graders)
Here are some pictures that the students took of the animals at the shelter. They used these photographs to help them create their oil portraits.
Students first created oil portraits of some of the animals at the shelter. They photographed the animals and used their images as a reference. Students began by drawing the animals and first painting a grisaille base. Once completed they glazed layers of oil paint over top to add some color.
These are some progress pictures taken during the grisaille phase.
Lastly, students also had the opportunity to paint a large abstract animal face. Here are some of their finished paintings.
