3rd Grade Figure Sculpture Progress

In art 3rd graders began this unit by examining human anatomy and proportions.  After drawing both the human skeleton and muscles, students practiced drawing each other in a series of gesture drawings.  Once they had practiced their figure drawing skills, students then took their talents and knowledge into the 3-D realm.

Students were asked to choose their favorite character from a story to re-create as a figure sculpture.  By first constructing a wire armature to act as the skeleton, students added tin foil and tape to represent the muscles.  Next, students added a layer of paper clay to represent the skin and tissue.  Next, students will use paint and mixed media to add amazing details to their figure sculptures.  Check out their finished sculptures in a later post!
