4th Grade Self-Portraits

In art, 4th grade students began the year by exploring their identities and creating a self-portrait.  For this self-portrait, students used mirrors to draw themselves from observation. Students learned how they can use facial proportions to guide them in drawing faces. They then used tempera paint and learned how to add value to enhance their skin tones and make their self-portraits appear more 3-dimensional. Students also used texture to show variation between the different surfaces such as their skin and hair. Students completed their self-portrait by adding aspects of their identity in their clothing and background.  The results are unique and expressive self-portraits that truly capture the student's’ identity!
